It’s A Marathon Not A Sprint
I ran the marathon in 2019.
I did it for me and my only two goals were to finish the race without stopping.
I wasn’t out there to beat anyone else but myself. I wanted to challenge myself to do something really hard.
There is something so beautiful about running.
It’s just you against you.
This past Sunday I had a few conversations with folks who have flirted with the idea of doing the same.
With marathons (and anything) it’s easy to dismiss the desire to push yourself to a limit most wouldn’t dare approach.

So I have this to say to the people who are thinking about running a marathon (or doing something they’ve never seen anyone else in their life do):
1. Do it…do it even if everyone around you thinks it’s crazy.
2. Meet yourself where you are.
3. Set goals that make sense for you.
4. Find and surround yourself with people who do get what you’re doing even if they are further along in their training than you.
5. Show up for yourself consistently through practice and discipline.
6. Give yourself grace if/when you fall short on your (speed or training) goals. Just don’t quit.
7. Enjoy the process of feeling defeated and then getting back up again to push yourself forward.
8. Celebrate all your wins big and small.
9. Set in your mind that it will happen and you will finish because you absolutely can and will.
My stats…I wasn’t there for speed. I was there to do something I’d never done before. The longest I ran before the marathon was a 10K. 😂
Of course, these words don’t just apply to aspiring marathon runners.
They apply to anyone trying to do a hard thing that feels scary.
You can do anything you want. Don’t be discouraged by how crazy anyone else thinks your desire is.
If you want to work with a coach along the way, I would be honored to be your coach.
I have done many scary things and feel privileged to have created a life that started in my imagination.
What life is lurking in your imagination? Let’s define it together.
My best,
Petrushka
